Parentheses

Parentheses are used:

  • to enclose structurally independent phrases, words, senĀ­tences that clarify a statement without altering the meaning.
Samuel Gompers (1850-1924) was a British-born American writer.
  • to present idiosyncratic abbreviations on the first occasion that they occur. Any technical term that is to be abbreviated must be spelled out on the first occasion and followed by its abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter, the abbreviation (without parentheses) is employed.
The theory implies that reaction time (RT) is a sum composed of durations of stages in the series.
