Table of contents

The table of contents should include the title and beginning page number of each section of the paper, including the index. If the paper is divided into parts as well as chapters, the part titles should appear in the contents, but the page numbers are not essential if the page number of the chapter following each part title is sufficient indication of where the part begins.

Subheads within chapters may be included in the table of contents, particularly in technical works and in papers with long chapters divided into sections defined by meaningful subheads. When subheads are included in the contents, they are indented differently from the chapter titles and often set in another typestyle. In a long table of contents they may be run in, each followed by its page number.
