Correcting Basics

  • Let's go through the basics steps of correcting a text.
  • This icon tells me that I have unmarked texts for this assignment.
  • This particular assignment uses two lists: academic words & common mistakes.
  • These lists are used for both teacher & student.
  • Let's correct a text now.
  • When you open a text, you immediately get general information and statistics for both lists. Each list has a different colour, but they don't have to be displayed simultaneously. Tooltips gives more information on the matter.
  • Let's start correcting: for a simple mistake, select the mistake, enter a correction, indicate the nature of the mistake in the matrix, and save.
  • For simple spelling mistakes, use the spelling button so you can work faster.
  • For each mistake, you can optionally enter correction, lemma, URL, comments, and labels. Interestingly, the URL field is directly linked to www.schrijven.ugent.be where anyone can find loads of information on writing academic texts in several languages.
  • If we enter 'conjunction' in the URL field, and it will automatically list all the webpages with theory on conjunctions.
  • Comments don't always have to be negative: the OK tick box or thumbs up button tell the student this is good work.
  • If you have identical mistakes in one text, you can copy all the settings from the first mistake and paste them onto the second: fast & effective! Just select the previous error, then the new one & click the paste button and save.
  • You can easily remove errors or comments: select them and press the delete button.
  • If you tick the box 'textbook example', it will be remembered by the system. At all times you can generate lists of textbook examples. These lists allows you to quickly collect authentic data for your next class!
  • If you are ready, you can give general comments to the student, label this particular text, look at the mistakes again before you enter a provisional or definite mark, and save and close everything.
  • Now let's look at those 'textbook example' lists. Click on the button "List textbook examples". Everything you indicated as textbook example appears in this list. You can easily retrieve the context of the error, or dig up the source text. You can also easily copy these errors, paste them in PowerPoint, and then hide them here.
