Tables, charts, graphs and other illustrative material

Tables

Tables are usually labelled, numbered with Arabic numerals, and captioned. Both labels and captions are in capital letters. The source of the table and accompanying notes should be placed at the bottom of the table. If no source is listed, a reader will assume that the table is your original work. Indicate notes to tables with asterisks, crosses, or lowercase letters to avoid confusion with endnotes, footnotes, or other textual notes.

Other illustrative materials

Other illustrative materials should be labelled "Fig." or "Figure" and numbered with Arabic numerals. Each figure should be captioned and capitalized.  The source of the illustration and any notes should be placed immediately below the illustration. If no source is cited the reader will believe the illustration is your original work. Indicate notes to illustrations with asterisks, crosses, or lower-case letters, so as to avoid confusion with other footnotes or endnotes in the text.
